For how iconic the series has become, the ever-expanding Gears of War franchise has, historically, had some issues with customization. Though there is a wild variety in the shapes and forms of the Locust adversaries, ranging from skittering dog-like monsters to cavern-mouthed titans, the Cog heroes tend to fit into two unshakable categories: beef statues clad in sci-fi plate mail for the gents, a svelte, sleeveless form of the same for the ladies. The biggest differences have come in the form of little cosmetics (Marcus has a bandana, Dom... does not) and what weapons the player tends to prefer - of which, to the games credit, there are many. Only our beefiest actors only play the characters in film adaptations and only our beefiest consoles may get secret ports of the titles. Truly, Gears of War has historically been about the beef at the cost of customizat

Gears Tactics is the latest game in the Gears (or Gears of War , as boomers may call it) franchise. A radical departure for the third-person shooter series, Gears Tactics is instead a tactical, turn-based RPG similar to XCOM or the recently released John Wick Hex . So far, it’s also only available on PC, not the Xbox

These missions often have specific parameters, such as a limit on the number of characters that can be deployed, or specific buffs for enemies like increased movement or damage. Also, Gears sent on one mission cannot be sent on anot

For the series' first foray into the rapidly evolving turn-based tactics genre, **Gears Tactics ** is an impressively balanced and well constructed strategic experience. Managing to avoid the pitfalls of some other genre-crossing series (for all that is good about it, the first Halo Wars SLG game collectibles had some pretty rough edges), Gears Tactics hits many of the right notes for a squad tactics title, including a fairly fleshed out equipm.ent customization system and some very involved soldier skill trees that allow for specialization that is critical to a rounded battle experience. While it is easy to see how these features have lead to comparisons to the likes of XCOM (which is amongst the highest of praises bestowable on a young turn based tactics series), the game manages to retain the unique flavor of its source material, finely portraying the gritty world that plays hosts to the ongoing conflict between mankind and the Locust hordes, with some clever, thematic mechanics to match . As adaptations go, this shifting of the Xbox flagship Gears series to a genre more about careful consideration than frenetic aggression has gone exceptionally smoot

The two opening skills for the support are both incredibly useful in their own right. Empower essentially hands an action point off to an ally, delegating the damage-doing to a more specialized soldier for a net increase in hurt thrown the enemy's way. Stim is simple and direct healing, a nice pop of 100 points at the skill's first level. While not exactly overly impressive, that little boost can be game-changing - 100 points of health can mean the difference between a soldier making it out of a crossfire alive or d

When players start an XCOM game they only have a handful of fresh soldiers who feel unprepared for the mission ahead of them. As a player progresses through the game it seems like every advance in technology or newly available resource is countered by some new weapon in the alien’s arse

Executions in Gears Tactics isn’t just there as a callback to previous games, it has a point. When committing an execution on a badly injured enemy, every soldier in the squad will gain one extra action point. This is crucial later in the game when the difficulty starts ramping

Very demoralizing, right? So check ammo from time to time just to be sure. While snipers can easily fire and reload during the action and others have battling gear that enhances ammo; For the rest of the characters make sure reloading is done regularly. If it comes to a point where there is no other choice, do not forget grenades or pist

The Support, as the name suggests, is something of a team-focused class. With their emphasis on abilities that boost or patch up their teammates, having a Support can be the key keeping a squad fighting longer and harder, coming out of tough combats still fresh as daisies that happen to have chainsaw g

The character-driven story in Gears Tactics is more compelling, and allows for voiced characters whose banter is amusing at times. For a player’s first play-through, this method of storytelling allows for a more interesting narrative, but the player will already know the story on subsequent play-throughs. In XCOM , each game is different. The soldiers will be different, the player can build their base in a different country, and the locations under attack will be different. Additionally, a player could focus on different avenues of research and technology (or psionics) than in previous playthroughs. This makes XCOM infinitely more replaya
